A family trip to Murree turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Wednesday when a passenger van plunged into a nullah and burst into flames on the Islamabad-Murree Expressway, killing at least 10 people and injuring 13 others, according to the National Highways & Motorway Police (NHMP).
The accident occurred near Khajut on the Islamabad-Murree Expressway when the Hiace van reportedly lost control while negotiating a turn and fell into a roadside nullah. Authorities said the vehicle came to rest in a position that prevented passengers from opening its door, trapping many inside as a fire rapidly spread through the van.
In an official statement, the NHMP confirmed that all victims were members of the same family and were travelling from Multan to Murree for a visit when the tragedy struck.
Rescue teams from the motorway police and local district administration rushed to the scene and launched emergency relief operations. The injured and the bodies of the deceased were shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad for treatment and identification.
Officials have begun an investigation into the cause of the crash and the subsequent fire. Authorities are expected to release further details once preliminary findings are completed.
The incident has renewed concerns about road safety on mountain-bound routes, particularly during the summer tourism season when traffic to northern destinations increases significantly.
