RAWALPINDI

A Pakistan Army major embraced martyrdom while leading an intelligence-based operation (IBO) in North Waziristan, where security forces killed five terrorists, while another seven terrorists were eliminated during a separate intelligence-based operation in Balochistan's Nushki district, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Saturday.

A total of 12 terrorists were killed in the two operations carried out as part of Pakistan's ongoing counterterrorism campaign under Vision Azm-i-Istehkam.

Major embraces martyrdom while leading troops

According to the ISPR, Major Hafiz Ihsan Elahi, 34, from Mianwali, embraced martyrdom while leading his troops from the front during an intelligence-based operation in the Razmak area of North Waziristan.

The military described the officer as a courageous leader who fought gallantly while engaging terrorists.

"Major Hafiz Ihsan Elahi, a brave officer who was leading his troops from the front, fought gallantly, paid the ultimate sacrifice and embraced shahadat," the ISPR said.

During the operation, security forces killed five terrorists affiliated with Fitna al Khawarij, the term used by the state for militants belonging to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Weapons and ammunition were recovered from the slain terrorists, whom the military said had been involved in attacks against security forces, law enforcement agencies and civilians.

Seven terrorists eliminated in Nushki

In a separate intelligence-based operation conducted on the night of July 30-31 in Nushki district, security forces killed seven terrorists, including a would-be suicide bomber.

The ISPR said the operation targeted militants belonging to Fitna al Hindustan, the term used by the state for terrorist groups operating in Balochistan.

According to the military, security forces identified and monitored a terrorist hideout before carrying out what it described as a prompt surgical operation that eliminated all seven terrorists.

Ammunition and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) found at the hideout were destroyed on site, according to the ISPR.

Sanitisation operations continue

The military said sanitisation operations are continuing in both areas to eliminate any remaining terrorists.

The ISPR reaffirmed that Pakistan's nationwide counterterrorism campaign under Vision Azm-i-Istehkam, approved by the Federal Apex Committee under the National Action Plan, will continue at full pace, adding that the sacrifices of security personnel further strengthen the country's resolve to eliminate terrorism and safeguard national security.

Counterterrorism efforts intensify

Pakistan has witnessed a rise in militant violence since the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ended its ceasefire with the government in November 2022.

In recent weeks, security forces have intensified intelligence-based operations across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan following several major terrorist attacks.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the government was implementing a comprehensive strategy to eliminate the threats posed by militant organisations, while Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir reaffirmed that terrorism threatening Pakistan would be confronted with the full strength of the state.

On July 29, the military also announced the killing of 32 terrorists during separate operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

Why it matters

The latest intelligence-based operations highlight Pakistan's continued efforts to dismantle militant networks through sustained counterterrorism operations. While the martyrdom of Major Hafiz Ihsan Elahi reflects the sacrifices made by security personnel, the elimination of 12 terrorists in the two operations demonstrates the military's ongoing commitment to enhancing national security and maintaining pressure on militant groups operating in conflict-affected regions.
