Bangladesh has expressed interest in joining the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, potentially expanding the reach of a new security framework among Muslim-majority countries.

Bangladesh's State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir said Dhaka had expressed its interest in the agreement and that the matter was being viewed positively.

Kabir said Bangladesh was increasingly being invited to engage with partners in the Middle East and the wider Muslim world, including through security and defence initiatives.

“If there is a security agreement between Islamic countries, then it is not unusual to go there,” Kabir said, while indicating that Bangladesh would continue to assess the matter.

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye sign pact

The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement was signed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during a trilateral summit in Makkah on August 7.

The agreement aims to strengthen collective security, defence cooperation and regional stability.

Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the three countries is to be regarded as an attack against all three, creating a framework for greater collective deterrence and military cooperation.

Bangladesh considers joining

Dhaka's statement marks an expression of interest rather than a formal decision to join the agreement.

Bangladesh has not announced that it has become a member of the pact, and further discussions would be required before any participation is confirmed.

Kabir said the proposal was being considered positively as Bangladesh seeks to strengthen its engagement with countries across the Muslim world.
