China has renewed calls for greater representation of developing nations at the United Nations, warning that rising geopolitical tensions and overlapping global crises are testing the effectiveness of existing international institutions.
Speaking at a rare press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said emerging economies continue to face inadequate representation in global governance despite their growing economic and political influence.
The remarks came alongside the release of a Chinese government white paper outlining proposals to make global governance more equitable and inclusive.
"Countries, whether large or small, strong or weak, developed or developing, are equal members of the international community," Wang said, stressing the need for more voices from the Global South to be heard in international decision-making.
Wang said the world is facing a series of interconnected political, economic and security challenges that have increased pressure on the international system. He warned that global disputes are exposing deep-rooted divisions while new risks continue to emerge.
Describing the current international environment as increasingly uncertain, Wang said the global community must strengthen cooperation to address shared challenges and prevent further instability.
On the Middle East, he called for all parties to commit firmly to a ceasefire and work toward establishing a sustainable regional security framework. He also emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving conflicts.
China has consistently advocated reforms to international institutions, arguing that developing countries should have a stronger role in shaping decisions that affect global peace, security and economic development.
