Cockroach Janta Party Demands Release of Detained Protesters as India's Exam Crisis Deepens

India's youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Monday called for the immediate release of protesters reportedly detained during recent demonstrations, warning that continued legal action against students could further erode public trust amid the country's ongoing examination crisis.

The appeal came two days after Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as India's education minister following weeks of nationwide protests over repeated failures in the conduct of competitive examinations. While the resignation followed mounting public pressure, the government has not officially stated that it was solely a result of the protests.

In a statement, the CJP said it had received reports of students being detained, particularly in the states of Assam, West Bengal and Bihar, despite earlier assurances that peaceful demonstrators would not face punitive action.

"Any failure to release those detained or withdraw criminal cases would amount to a breach of public trust," the group said, adding that it would take "further necessary steps" if its demands were not met.

The organisation accused authorities of backtracking on their commitments and urged the government to release all detained protesters and withdraw criminal cases linked to the demonstrations.

Founded in May by 30-year-old public relations professional Abhijeet Dipke, the Cockroach Janta Party has rapidly emerged as one of India's most influential youth-led protest movements, attracting millions of followers across social media platforms.

The movement began as a satirical campaign after Chief Justice Surya Kant was reported to have referred to young people as "cockroaches" and "parasites" during a court hearing. Since then, it has expanded its agenda to include unemployment, opportunities for young people and concerns over what organisers describe as Prime Minister Narendra Modi's increasingly authoritarian style of governance.

Tens of thousands of protesters, most of them students, gathered in New Delhi and other cities last week, demanding Pradhan's resignation and comprehensive reforms to India's examination system.

Violence broke out on July 20 when demonstrators attempted to march from Jantar Mantar towards Parliament. Police used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd, leading to clashes and a wave of detentions.

The protests have become one of the most significant public challenges to Modi's government since he secured a third consecutive term in office in 2024.

The issue also dominated proceedings in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Parliament, on Monday as opposition lawmakers repeatedly disrupted sessions, demanding an explanation from the government over last week's police crackdown.

Despite the disruptions, the government introduced legislation seeking tougher penalties for examination paper leaks.

Public confidence in India's examination system has been shaken by a series of controversies, including the leak of a national medical entrance examination that forced more than two million candidates to retake the test. A separate dispute involving the digital marking of examinations taken by nearly two million high school students has further intensified public concern.

The latest developments highlight growing demands for greater transparency, accountability and reforms to India's education and recruitment systems, with the movement evolving beyond examination issues into a broader campaign centred on governance, youth opportunities and institutional accountability.
