Delhi Court Acquits Former India Wrestling Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh in Sexual Harassment Case

A court in New Delhi on Monday acquitted former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexual harassment and stalking charges, ending a high-profile case that sparked nationwide protests by India's leading wrestlers and intensified debate over athlete safety and accountability.
Singh, 69, a former member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had faced allegations from several women wrestlers who accused him of sexual harassment, inappropriate touching, and demanding sexual favours. He denied all allegations throughout the proceedings.
The case gained national attention in 2023 when Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik, world champion Vinesh Phogat, and other prominent wrestlers staged weeks-long protests demanding Singh's removal from the Wrestling Federation of India. Images of athletes being detained during demonstrations in New Delhi drew widespread public attention and renewed scrutiny of governance in Indian sport.
According to Singh's lawyer, Rajiv Mohan, the court acquitted his client after finding inconsistencies in witness statements and contradictions in key evidence presented during the trial. Supporters celebrated the verdict outside the courthouse with flower petals and fireworks.
Speaking after the ruling, Singh welcomed the judgment, saying he had maintained his innocence from the beginning and was pleased to have been acquitted.
However, Vinesh Phogat said the wrestlers would appeal the decision in a higher court, stating that their fight for justice would continue despite the verdict.
Delhi Police had filed charges against Singh in 2023 following months of pressure from protesting athletes, making the case one of the most closely watched legal proceedings involving a senior sports administrator in India.
