British pop star Dua Lipa has publicly backed protesters opposing a Trump family-linked luxury resort in Albania, criticizing the government's handling of the project and calling the movement "inspiring" as demonstrations continue over environmental protections.
Speaking on her Service95 Book Club podcast with Albanian author Lea Ypi, the Grammy-winning singer said she was troubled by reports that environmental safeguards could be removed without public consultation.
"What I actually find concerning is the principle that the government could just change the law to remove the environmental protection without any kind of public consultation," Lipa said.
The proposed luxury resort, linked to US President Donald Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner, has drawn widespread opposition since construction equipment and fencing appeared in a protected coastal nature reserve in late May.
Lipa, whose parents are of Kosovan-Albanian heritage, praised the commitment of demonstrators, saying it was inspiring to see how deeply people cared about protecting their country's natural environment. She also argued that the dispute reflected broader structural challenges and called for development that better serves local communities.
The resort project, first announced in 2024, has become a focal point for wider public frustration over alleged government transparency and corruption. Some protesters are also demanding the resignation of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.
Environmental activist Besjana Gurri welcomed Lipa's comments, describing them as a powerful message that could draw greater international attention to the protests and amplify the concerns of demonstrators in Tirana.
