KARACHI: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested four suspects, including two officials of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra), in Karachi over an alleged fake identity document network for Afghan nationals, with investigators also examining possible links to terrorist elements.
According to an FIA statement issued on Wednesday, those arrested include Nadra Assistant Director Imamul Haq, Deputy Assistant Director Fayyaz Ahmed, watchman Junaid Ahmed, and private agent Muhammad Umar Shah.
During the operation, investigators recovered official records and documentary evidence believed to be linked to the network. The FIA said the investigation has been expanded and that additional arrests are expected as authorities work to identify all facilitators and key figures involved.
Preliminary findings indicate the suspects allegedly facilitated the issuance of fraudulent Pakistani identity documents for Afghan nationals, manipulated official records and participated in other illegal activities. The agency added that initial evidence suggests possible links between the network and terrorist elements, stressing that this aspect of the case remains under investigation.
The arrests came a day after the family of suspect Fayyaz Ahmed filed an application with police after he was reported missing. The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) had also urged the Sindh government to expedite efforts to determine his whereabouts.
The latest operation comes as Pakistan continues its nationwide crackdown on illegal immigration and identity fraud. Authorities have intensified enforcement against individuals accused of facilitating fake documentation, while the repatriation of undocumented Afghan nationals has accelerated following recent government directives.
The FIA has carried out similar operations in recent months. Earlier this month, three Nadra officials were arrested in Chakwal for allegedly issuing a Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) to an Afghan national imprisoned in Pakistan. In April, another Nadra official was arrested in Karachi over allegations of issuing fake identity cards to Afghan nationals.
The case has renewed concerns over document fraud, national security and illegal immigration, making it one of the country's most closely watched investigations. The FIA says further revelations are expected as investigators continue examining the alleged network and its potential connections.
