Albanian police have arrested five people, including two Italian nationals, after dismantling an alleged drug distribution network in the coastal city of Vlora, seizing hundreds of ready-to-sell doses of suspected narcotics during a major anti-drug operation.
The operation, codenamed "WEST," targeted suspected drug trafficking activities ahead of the busy summer tourism season. According to police, officers confiscated approximately 700 ready-to-sell doses of suspected Tusi, ketamine, MDMA, cocaine, ecstasy and cannabis.
Authorities identified the suspects as three Albanian citizens from Lezhë and two Italian citizens residing in Rome and Palermo.
Police said the suspects were intercepted in the Zvërnec area. Searches of the individuals, their vehicle and an apartment in Vlora's Uji i Ftohtë neighborhood led to the seizure of suspected narcotics, an undisclosed amount of cash believed to be linked to criminal activity and eight mobile phones.
Preliminary investigations indicate the group was allegedly supplying illegal drugs at beaches and entertainment venues across the Vlora region during the peak tourist season.
The case has been referred to prosecutors, with the suspects under investigation on allegations of producing and trafficking narcotics in cooperation with one another. Authorities said investigations remain ongoing to determine whether additional individuals were involved.
