MEXICO, October 13, 2026: At least five people have died after Hurricane Simon and the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel brought destructive flooding, heavy rainfall and infrastructure damage to parts of Mexico, according to reports from authorities and international news agencies.
The two weather systems affected different parts of the country, prompting rescue operations and warnings about continuing flood and landslide risks.
Hurricane Simon Batters Western Mexico
Hurricane Simon remained offshore as its outer bands brought heavy rain and strong winds to communities along Mexico’s Pacific coast. The storm damaged homes, uprooted trees, brought down electricity poles and blocked roads in Guerrero state, including areas around Acapulco.
Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado reported that a 71-year-old man died in Chilpancingo after a wall collapsed.
Simon had weakened to Category 2 by the latest reports, but authorities continued to warn residents about dangerous weather conditions. The storm had not made landfall at the time covered by those reports.
Rachel's Remnants Cause Deadly Flooding
In Baja California, flooding associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel caused four reported deaths near Ensenada. The victims included two children, according to reporting that cited state authorities.
Rescue teams searched flood-affected communities as water swept away vehicles and damaged homes. Authorities also reported six people missing in Baja California in the latest Associated Press account.
Mexican military personnel used helicopters to evacuate 32 people from a ranch in Ensenada. Officials said some of those rescued were foreign nationals.
Officials Maintain Weather Alerts
Although Simon weakened and moved away from parts of the coast, the danger had not fully passed. The US National Hurricane Center warned that additional rainfall could trigger life-threatening flooding and mudslides across west-central Mexico.
Coastal communities also faced dangerous surf, with waves reaching several metres in some areas. Flooding and landslides had already affected communities near rivers and streams in Michoacán and Colima.
Residents in affected areas were urged to follow instructions from local emergency authorities, avoid flooded roads and stay away from rivers, streams and exposed coastal areas.
Why the Situation Matters
The reported deaths underline the dangers that can remain even when a hurricane stays offshore or weakens. Heavy rainfall can overwhelm drainage systems, trigger landslides and turn normally manageable waterways into dangerous currents.
Emergency services continued responding to the damage as authorities assessed the situation. The reported toll and number of missing people may change as search operations and official assessments continue.
