New Delhi, India: Delhi Police has withdrawn Jantar Mantar’s status as an authorised protest venue, ending its formal designation as a location for public demonstrations after more than three decades.
An order issued on October 11, 2026, designated Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi as alternative venues for protests. The decision follows recommendations from a committee established by India’s Ministry of Home Affairs to identify suitable locations for public demonstrations.
The move comes amid renewed tensions over electoral roll revisions and protests led by the youth-driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Demonstrators have raised concerns that the changes could exclude eligible voters and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. These allegations remain contested.
For decades, Jantar Mantar has been a prominent gathering point for trade unions, retired military personnel, student activists, women’s rights campaigners and anti-corruption groups. Its central location near Parliament and other government institutions made it an important platform for citizens seeking political attention.
Human rights activist Shabnam Hashmi criticised the decision, arguing that the site’s location and accessibility were central to its importance as a protest venue. Other campaigners have expressed concerns that moving demonstrations to alternative grounds could reduce their visibility and make it harder to reach political decision-makers.
The change does not constitute a blanket ban on protests across Delhi. Instead, it removes Jantar Mantar from the list of designated demonstration sites and directs protesters towards alternative locations.
Why It Matters: The decision could reshape how demonstrators access public spaces in India’s capital, renewing debate over peaceful assembly, public order and the visibility of civic demands.
