NEW DELHI: An Indian Air Force fighter aircraft, the Sukhoi Su‑30MKI, lost radar contact during a routine sortie over the northeastern state of Assam, prompting an urgent search and rescue operation, defense officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The aircraft had taken off from an air base in Jorhat before disappearing from radar while flying over the mountainous Karbi Anglong district region.
According to Indian Air Force officials, contact with the fighter jet was lost during the evening mission, after which emergency response protocols were activated. Helicopters, ground teams, and local authorities have been mobilized to search the suspected area where the aircraft may have gone down.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the aircraft has crashed or whether the pilots ejected safely. The status of the crew remains unknown as rescue teams continue scanning the rugged terrain.
The Su-30MKI is one of the most advanced combat aircraft operated by the Indian Air Force and forms a key part of India’s frontline fighter fleet. Developed jointly by Russia’s Sukhoi design bureau and India’s aerospace industry, the aircraft is designed for long-range air superiority and multirole combat missions.
Defense analysts say incidents involving frontline fighter aircraft are rare but are immediately investigated to determine whether mechanical failure, weather conditions, or operational factors contributed to the loss of contact.
