NEW DELHI: India's rapidly growing Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement has vowed to continue nationwide protests until Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns, intensifying pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government after violent clashes left nearly 180 people injured in New Delhi.
Thousands of demonstrators gathered in the Indian capital on Monday, demanding the minister's resignation and sweeping reforms to the country's examination system following a series of high-profile testing scandals. Police used tear gas and baton charges to stop protesters from marching toward Parliament.
The demonstrations have emerged as one of the biggest youth-led challenges to the Modi government since its third consecutive election victory in 2024, reflecting growing public frustration over examination controversies and limited employment opportunities despite India's economic growth.
According to Delhi Police, 178 people were injured during the clashes, including 118 police personnel and around 60 protesters. Authorities accused sections of the crowd of violent behaviour, while protest organisers alleged that security forces used excessive force against peaceful demonstrators.
CJP leader Ashutosh Ranka said the movement would continue until the government addressed its demands, insisting that Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan must step down. Ranka also confirmed he met senior minister JP Nadda but said no meaningful response had been provided by the government.
Public anger has intensified after multiple examination controversies shook confidence in India's education system. Last month, more than 2.2 million medical students were required to retake an entrance examination after a question paper leak led to the cancellation of the original test. Another controversy involving the online marking of examinations for nearly two million high school students has further fuelled criticism of the system.
With protesters refusing to end their campaign and no major concessions announced by the government, demonstrations are expected to continue in the coming days, keeping India's education policies and examination reforms under intense national scrutiny.
