India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday following days of nationwide youth-led demonstrations demanding accountability over alleged examination paper leaks, handing protesters their biggest political victory since the movement began.

The resignation came amid escalating demonstrations across several Indian cities, with thousands of students accusing the government of failing to protect the integrity of competitive examinations that determine university admissions and career opportunities for millions of young people.

Pradhan announced his decision through a two-page resignation letter posted on X, confirming that he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In the letter, the minister said he stepped down to prevent the ongoing unrest from deepening divisions in the country and to ensure students could return their focus to education.

"The unity of the country should be preserved, and not even a single Indian student's future should become entangled in legal complications," Pradhan wrote.

The announcement came only hours after police used tear gas to disperse protesters gathered near Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, where thousands of students had assembled for another demonstration while movement leaders prepared for fresh talks with government representatives.

The protests have evolved into one of the largest youth-led challenges faced by Prime Minister Modi's government since he assumed office in 2014, with opposition parties backing the demonstrators and repeatedly disrupting proceedings during Parliament's ongoing monsoon session.

Movement claims victory but says campaign is not over

Celebrations erupted among protesters after news of the resignation spread.

Civil Justice Platform (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke, one of the leading voices behind the demonstrations, described the resignation as proof that democratic protest can force political accountability.

"This is democracy. He has resigned," Dipke told supporters gathered at the protest site.

However, he made it clear that the movement would continue until additional demands are addressed.

Among those demands is compensation of 10 million Indian rupees for the families of students whom activists say died following the examination leak controversy.

Standing before a banner displaying photographs of 20 students, Dipke said the resignation was dedicated to them.

He also demanded disciplinary action against police officers accused of using excessive force during the July 20 crackdown on protesters and called for all criminal cases registered against students during the demonstrations to be withdrawn.

In remarks that reflected the movement's now-famous slogan, Dipke declared that protesters would not disappear simply because one demand had been met.

"We are cockroaches. Once it enters, it does not leave," he told supporters.

Despite being hailed by many protesters, Dipke urged participants not to turn him into the face of the movement.

"The country has suffered because people make one individual a hero," he said, urging supporters instead to remain focused on issues affecting students rather than personality politics.

He also called for Indians to move beyond religious divisions and concentrate on common national concerns.

"When we rise above Hindu and Muslim politics and talk about issues, then it will be good for the country."

Sonam Wangchuk calls resignation a victory for democracy

Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, who ended a 26-day hunger strike a day earlier, welcomed the minister's resignation and described it as a triumph for peaceful democratic action.

Writing on X, Wangchuk congratulated the CJP movement and India's younger generation for maintaining pressure through peaceful demonstrations.

He praised citizens across the country for overcoming fear and standing together in support of students demanding accountability.

Minister defends government's response

Although stepping down, Pradhan rejected suggestions that the government ignored the controversy.

He said authorities acted immediately after allegations of irregularities emerged in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) conducted on May 3.

According to the minister, the government transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), cancelled the disputed examination, announced a fresh test, and decided that future examinations would be conducted in computer-based test (CBT) mode to improve security and transparency.

Pradhan also accused unnamed individuals of attempting to mislead students and create unnecessary obstacles during the crisis.

"This is not a matter of personal reputation," he wrote.

"I have always respected the dreams and aspirations of India's youth. They are the builders of a developed India."

He concluded by expressing hope that his resignation would help restore confidence and prevent young people from becoming trapped in what he described as "a web of confusion."

Political pressure expected to continue

While the resignation marks a significant concession by the government, analysts believe pressure on the Modi administration is unlikely to ease soon.

Protest leaders have vowed to maintain demonstrations until all outstanding demands are fulfilled, including justice for affected students, police accountability and broader reforms aimed at protecting the credibility of India's examination system.

The issue has become a national political flashpoint, with education reform now emerging as one of the most closely watched domestic challenges facing the government.
