Indonesia Floods Death Toll Surpasses 1,000 as Rescue Efforts Continue

Jakarta, Indonesia – Devastating floods and landslides in Sumatra, Indonesia, have claimed the lives of 1,003 people, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, with 218 still missing. Over 5,400 people have been injured, and approximately 1.2 million residents have been forced into temporary shelters as relief operations continue.

The torrential rains and flash floods are among the worst disasters to strike northwestern Sumatra since the 2004 tsunami that hit Aceh province, located at the northern tip of the island. Authorities warn that the death toll may rise further as rescue teams reach remote areas.

Frustration has grown among victims due to the slow pace of relief efforts, though President Prabowo Subianto said the situation is improving. “Several previously cut-off areas are now accessible. Evacuation sites are in good condition, with adequate services and sufficient food supplies,” he stated during a visit to Langkat, North Sumatra.

The economic cost of the disaster is expected to reach 51.82 trillion rupiah ($3.1 billion), as the government focuses on national recovery and has not sought international aid so far.
