Iran Confirms Launch of Three Satellites from Russia in Major Space Milestone

Iran launched three additional satellites into space on Sunday using Russia’s Soyuz launch vehicles, Iranian state media reported, highlighting the growing space cooperation between the two U.S.-sanctioned nations.

The satellites were sent into low Earth orbit as part of Iran’s expanding space program, which has increasingly depended on Russia’s launch capabilities in recent years. According to Iranian officials, the newly launched satellites are designed to support agricultural monitoring, natural resource management, and environmental observation.

Iran’s ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, said the satellites were designed and built by Iranian scientists, despite ongoing Western sanctions related to Iran’s nuclear program. Speaking to state television, Jalali emphasized Tehran’s technological progress under pressure.

“We are working together with Russia in different areas,” Jalali said, adding that some aspects of the cooperation remain undisclosed.

Iran’s official IRNA news agency identified the satellites as Paya, Zafar 2, and a second Kowsar, all intended for low Earth orbit missions.

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, ties between Iran and Russia have deepened across military, economic, and technological sectors. Western governments have accused Iran of supplying drones and missiles for Russian military operations in Ukraine, allegations that Tehran has repeatedly denied.

The latest satellite launch underscores the strengthening Iran–Russia alliance and signals continued collaboration in space technology and satellite development despite international pressure.
