Pakistan is experiencing a fresh winter spell as cold air systems continue to affect Islamabad, northern regions, and parts of Balochistan, bringing snowfall, icy conditions, and a sharp drop in temperatures.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), light rain and cold winds are expected in Islamabad, where temperatures may range between 3°C and 7°C, with colder nights in surrounding areas. While snowfall is unlikely in the capital, chilly winds and early-morning fog may affect visibility.

In the northern areas, including Murree, Galiyat, Swat, Kaghan, Naran, Chilas, and Gilgit-Baltistan, moderate to heavy snowfall has been reported in higher elevations. Daytime temperatures in these regions are hovering between -2°C and 5°C, while nighttime temperatures are falling well below freezing. Several internal roads remain slippery due to ice accumulation.

Authorities have advised travelers heading north to exercise caution, as Murree–Nathiagali Road, Ayubia routes, and sections of the Karakoram Highway may face temporary closures or traffic slowdowns. Tourists are urged to carry snow chains, avoid night travel, and follow local advisories.

Meanwhile, northern Balochistan, including Quetta, Ziarat, and surrounding districts, has witnessed cold waves with temperatures dropping to -5°C to 2°C. Light snowfall in elevated areas has further intensified the cold, affecting daily life and transport.

Why it matters now: With winter tourism peaking and intercity travel increasing, weather-related disruptions could impact safety, supply chains, and emergency response readiness across key regions.
