KARACHI: Karachi police on Thursday said the prime suspect in the abduction, sexual assault and murder of a six-year-old girl was killed during an alleged exchange of gunfire in the city's Keamari district after officers attempted to arrest him.

According to a statement issued by Keamari police, FIR No. 265/2026 was registered at Jackson Police Station under Sections 364-A and 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code following the child's abduction and murder.

Police said investigators reviewed CCTV footage from multiple locations, along with forensic and technical evidence, before identifying the suspect's whereabouts. Acting on credible intelligence, a police team conducted a raid near the Mubarak Mosque area within the jurisdiction of Jackson Police Station.

Authorities claimed the suspect opened fire on officers as they approached, prompting police to return fire. The suspect sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange and later died, according to the official statement.

Police said the scene was secured immediately, forensic evidence was collected and a separate case relating to the alleged police encounter is being registered. Officials added that legal and forensic procedures remain underway.

Meanwhile, the body of the six-year-old girl was recovered from bushes in Karachi's Manora area.

Police Surgeon Dr. Sumaiyya Syed said the child had been subjected to sexual violence and suffered multiple injuries across her body. She confirmed that forensic samples had been collected, while the final cause of death would be determined after laboratory examination.

Police said the investigation into the case is continuing with the help of CCTV footage, medico-legal findings, forensic evidence and technical analysis to establish all aspects of the crime.

The incident comes only weeks after another child murder case in Karachi, where police arrested a 20-year-old man accused of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and killing a six-year-old boy, underscoring growing public concern over crimes against children.

Why it matters: The case has intensified calls for stronger child protection measures, faster investigations and transparent legal proceedings as authorities continue efforts to address violent crimes against minors.
