TOKYO: A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan's Kyushu region on Tuesday, prompting tsunami warnings, disrupting transport services and causing widespread power outages as authorities assessed reports of injuries and structural damage.
The earthquake's epicentre was in Kumamoto Prefecture, triggering emergency earthquake alerts across Nagasaki, Kagoshima, Fukuoka, Saga, Oita and Miyazaki prefectures.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) initially issued a tsunami warning for waves of up to one metre. The advisory was lifted less than two hours later after officials confirmed that no significant tsunami activity had been detected.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said preliminary reports indicated several people had been injured, while power outages, fires, damaged roads, bridges and collapsed buildings had also been reported.
Emergency teams continued assessing the full extent of casualties and infrastructure damage.
According to Kyushu Electric Power, approximately 40,000 households lost electricity following the earthquake. Railway operator JR Kyushu suspended several train services, including parts of its high-speed Shinkansen network, while safety inspections were carried out.
Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority said no abnormalities had been detected at nuclear power facilities in the affected region.
The region is home to manufacturing facilities operated by companies including Sony and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Sony said it was assessing the impact on operations, while TSMC had not immediately commented.
Japan lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most active seismic zones, making the country highly vulnerable to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
Why it matters: The earthquake has disrupted daily life across southern Japan, affecting transport, electricity supplies and businesses while authorities continue assessing casualties, infrastructure damage and the risk of further aftershocks.
