A high-level meeting of the Strategic Political and Defence Committee (SPDC) under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement is being held in Riyadh on Monday, with Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye set to review regional developments and cooperation under the trilateral defence framework.
Pakistan’s delegation includes Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, according to the Foreign Office. Saudi and Turkish foreign and defence ministers and chiefs of general staff are also attending.
The Foreign Office said the meeting will discuss the latest developments in the region and review ongoing cooperation under the Makkah Agreement. Pakistan said its participation reflects its commitment to contributing to regional peace and stability.
The meeting comes amid heightened tensions involving Yemen’s Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia. Reuters reported that the committee will also address the alliance’s institutionalisation as the three countries work to develop the framework established by the agreement.
The Makkah Joint Defence Agreement was signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye on August 7. Under the agreement, an armed attack against any one of the three countries is to be regarded as an attack against all three, establishing a framework for collective security and defence cooperation.
The SPDC held its inaugural meeting in Istanbul on August 31, with senior foreign, defence and military officials from all three countries taking part. The members have since continued consultations as they work toward implementing the new defence framework.
The Riyadh meeting follows separate talks among the three countries’ military chiefs on September 25, when they discussed security threats facing Saudi Arabia, intelligence sharing, military coordination and closer defence cooperation under the pact.
The latest meeting comes as the security situation around Saudi Arabia and Yemen remains a major regional concern, placing additional importance on coordination among the three Makkah pact members.
