Woman and Daughter Killed in Suspected ‘Honour’ Killing in Karachi’s Gizri; Husband Arrested

A woman and her teenage daughter were stabbed to death in a suspected ‘honour’ killing in Karachi’s Gizri area on Friday night, according to police.

Authorities identified the victims as Kulsoom, 43, and her 11-year-old daughter Maryam, who were allegedly killed by Kulsoom’s husband, Samiullah. South DIG Syed Asad Raza confirmed that the double murder appeared to be an honour-related crime.

Police arrested the suspect shortly after the incident and recovered the murder weapon, a knife used in the attack. A case has been registered against Samiullah on the complaint of the victim’s brother, Faisal Khan.

According to investigators, the suspect attacked his wife and daughter inside their home near Noorani Masjid. Both victims were rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where doctors pronounced them dead on arrival.

Rising Cases of ‘Honour’ Killings in Pakistan

The tragic incident adds to the growing number of ‘honour’ killings in Pakistan, which continue to claim lives across the country. Deep-rooted societal beliefs about family honour and shame remain a driving force behind such crimes.

According to data from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), 346 people were victims of ‘honour’ crimes between January and November 2024, with the highest numbers reported in Sindh and Punjab provinces.

Man Shot Dead, Another Injured in Lyari

In a separate incident, a man was shot dead and another injured in Lyari on Friday.

Chakiwara SHO Sajid Dharejo said two men were attacked in Bihar Colony and taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi’s trauma centre. One victim, Ahmed Wali, 40, succumbed to his injuries, while Kamran Husain, 28, sustained a bullet wound to his leg and is reported to be out of danger.

Police suspect personal enmity as the motive behind the shooting. An FIR will be registered once the victims’ relatives approach the authorities to initiate formal proceedings and help identify the suspects involved.

Both incidents highlight the ongoing challenges of gender-based violence and urban crime in Karachi, underscoring the urgent need for stronger law enforcement and social awareness to prevent such tragedies.
