Netherlands Condemns Trump’s Greenland Tariff Threat as Unjust Pressure

The Netherlands has sharply criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose trade tariffs over Greenland, calling it an unprecedented and coercive tactic that risks destabilizing transatlantic relations.

Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel described the threat as “unacceptable economic pressure” and warned that such actions undermine trust between allies. He stressed that Greenland’s future should be determined through diplomacy and mutual respect, not trade intimidation.

Trump’s warning targeted several European nations, suggesting additional import tariffs unless U.S. strategic interests in Greenland were prioritized. The Arctic territory, an autonomous region within Denmark, has grown in strategic importance due to its location, natural resources, and security significance.

European officials expressed deep concern, highlighting that linking trade measures to security or territorial issues could escalate tensions and strain NATO unity. EU diplomats emphasized that predictable trade relations and coordinated international dialogue remain essential to global stability.

Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected any notion of external pressure, affirming that Greenland’s political future rests solely with its own people.

The Dutch government called for calm and constructive diplomacy, urging Washington to resolve disputes through engagement rather than punitive economic measures. Analysts warn that repeated threats of this nature could damage long-term U.S.–European relations and weaken the framework of international cooperation in the Arctic region.
