A date that has resurfaced across social media is being described as “Doomsday” for humanity: November 13, 2026.

The claim is based on a real scientific paper published more than six decades ago. But the viral interpretation leaves out a crucial detail.

The researchers did not predict that the world would end on November 13, 2026.

The date came from a mathematical extrapolation of historical human population growth. Under the assumptions used in the study, the model produced a mathematical singularity at which the population would theoretically approach infinity.

That is very different from predicting an apocalypse.

Where did the date come from?

The claim dates back to a paper published in the journal Science in 1960 by physicists Heinz von Foerster, Patricia M. Mora and Lawrence W. Amiot.

Its deliberately striking title was:

“Doomsday: Friday, 13 November, A.D. 2026.”

The paper examined historical estimates of human population and attempted to describe the long-term trend mathematically.

The researchers found that a particular mathematical relationship could approximate the population data available to them. When that relationship was extended into the future, it produced a singularity on November 13, 2026.

The study did not establish that an asteroid would strike Earth, that humanity would suddenly disappear or that the planet itself would be destroyed on November 13.

An infinite population is physically impossible.

If the historical growth pattern continued.

Why the 2026 claim is going viral

The story has all the ingredients of a viral prediction.

The paper is real.

The date is real.

The word “Doomsday” is in the original title.

And November 13, 2026 happens to be a Friday the 13th.

But removing the mathematical condition from the original research changes the meaning of the study.

There is a major difference between saying:

“A 1960 mathematical model produced a population singularity in 2026 under a specific growth assumption.”

and saying:

“Scientists predicted that the world will end in 2026.”

The first is an accurate description.

The second is not.

What is a mathematical singularity?

A singularity in this context is a point where the mathematical expression used by the researchers stops producing a physically meaningful finite population.

As the model approaches the calculated date, its predicted population rises without bound.

But an equation reaching infinity does not mean the real-world population would actually become infinite.

Instead, it tells us that the model cannot sensibly be extended beyond that point under its assumptions.

Does November 13, 2026 mean anything scientifically?

There is no credible scientific evidence that Earth faces a global catastrophe specifically because the calendar reaches November 13, 2026.

The date's significance comes from a historical mathematical calculation, not from a modern scientific warning about an imminent apocalypse.

The original calculation remains interesting because it demonstrates how dramatically a mathematical curve can behave when accelerating growth is extrapolated indefinitely.

But the real world does not have to follow that curve.

And it did not.

The real lesson behind the “Doomsday” date

The 1960 study still offers an important lesson.

Growth trends cannot automatically be extended forever.

A model can identify a pattern in historical data.

It can reveal potential consequences.

It can force researchers to think about where a trend could lead.

But the assumptions behind that model must continue to hold.

When circumstances change, the projection changes.

That is why modern population forecasts are continually updated as demographic conditions evolve.

So, will the world end on November 13?

Based on current scientific evidence, there is no reason to believe it will.

The world's population is nowhere near the infinite value implied by that old model, and modern UN projections show a very different demographic trajectory.

The date will arrive.
