HIMARË, Albania: An OSHEE utility worker was killed while restoring electricity in southern Albania after severe weather knocked out power across several communities, authorities said on Wednesday.
The victim was part of an overnight emergency response launched after strong winds and adverse weather conditions disrupted electricity supplies in the Himarë region. OSHEE, Albania's state-owned electricity distribution operator, had deployed crews to restore power when the fatal accident occurred.
According to preliminary police findings, the incident happened at approximately 3:00 a.m. in the Potam area of Himarë. The worker, identified as B.B., 54, from Elbasan, had been assigned to assist local OSHEE teams responding to the outages.
Authorities said the technician was working atop a utility pole to reconnect a power cable when the safety belt securing him reportedly failed. He fell from an estimated height of nine metres, suffering fatal injuries.
The worker was rushed to the Himarë Health Centre at around 3:40 a.m., where medical personnel confirmed he had died.
Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation. Initial reports indicate the possibility that the worker may also have suffered electrocution before or during the fall, although officials stressed that this has not been confirmed and will be determined through technical examinations.
Investigators have secured the scene and are collecting evidence, while specialists are expected to examine the equipment and working conditions to establish the precise cause of the fatal accident.
The incident comes as emergency crews continue restoring electricity across parts of southern Albania affected by severe weather, highlighting the risks faced by utility workers who respond to power outages under hazardous conditions to maintain essential public services.
Authorities are expected to release further findings once forensic and technical investigations are completed, including whether equipment failure, electrical hazards or other factors contributed to the tragedy.
