Pakistan and China have launched the Karakoram 2026 joint army training exercise in Korla, in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, with a focus on counter terrorism operations in high-altitude terrain.
The opening ceremony took place on Wednesday, October 14, at a military training base in Korla, according to Dawn and Anadolu Agency. The exercise marks the first joint army training programme between the two countries, according to China's Ministry of National Defense.
The training programme includes unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations, searching for and firing at moving targets, long-range sniping, joint command procedures and live-force exercises, Chinese defence officials said.
During the opening phase, Pakistani and Chinese personnel exchanged counter terrorism experience, while Pakistani troops observed Chinese weapons and military equipment, Dawn reported.
The exercise is intended to strengthen cooperation and improve coordination between the two armies in responding to terrorist threats. Its high-altitude focus also places emphasis on military skills needed to operate in demanding mountainous environments.
The development comes amid continued defence engagement between Islamabad and Beijing. In September, Pakistani and Chinese forces conducted a joint patrol near Mantika Pass, close to Khunjerab, according to Dawn.
Karakoram 2026 highlights the continuing role of military training in Pakistan-China security relations. However, the reports reviewed do not specify the total number of participating troops or the exercise's scheduled completion date.
Why It Matters: The exercise demonstrates continued defence engagement between Pakistan and China, with practical emphasis on counter terrorism training, operational coordination and high-altitude preparedness.
