Pakistan’s tobacco export industry has suffered a major setback during the current fiscal year, with export earnings falling by nearly $30 million amid weakening global demand and a growing international surplus in tobacco supply.
According to industry sources on Saturday, Pakistan generated approximately $114 million from tobacco exports between July 2025 and March 2026, compared to nearly $144 million during the same period last fiscal year, marking a sharp year-on-year decline.
Officials associated with the sector said international market conditions have shifted significantly in recent months, reducing demand for Pakistani tobacco in key export destinations. Increased global production and tougher price competition from rival tobacco-producing countries have further pressured exporters and reduced profit margins.
Industry representatives warned that the remaining months of FY26 could become even more challenging if global demand fails to recover. Concerns are also growing over the potential financial impact on farmers, processors, and laborers connected to the tobacco supply chain.
The tobacco sector remains a key source of agricultural income in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially in districts such as Swabi, where thousands of growers depend on tobacco cultivation for their livelihoods.
Economic analysts say continued weakness in tobacco exports could place additional strain on Pakistan’s trade balance and foreign exchange reserves at a time when the country is attempting to stabilize its economy and strengthen overall export performance.
Why it matters now: Declining tobacco exports could reduce foreign exchange inflows, hurt rural agricultural communities, and increase pressure on Pakistan’s broader export-driven economic recovery during FY26.
