Pakistan Warns UN Security Council Diplomacy Breakdown Is Complicating Iran Nuclear Issue | ChatZyr

NEW YORK: Pakistan warned the United Nations Security Council on Thursday that the collapse of diplomatic engagement in the Middle East is further complicating the long-running dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme.
Speaking during a Security Council briefing in New York, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said divisions among Council members are weakening oversight mechanisms linked to Iran’s nuclear file.
“The Council remains divided on the 1737 Committee issue,” Ambassador Ahmad told the meeting, referring to the sanctions monitoring body established under UN Security Council Resolution 1737.
He warned that disagreements are delaying the appointment of chairs for key subsidiary bodies, affecting the committee’s ability to perform routine oversight.
The 1737 Committee supervises sanctions related to Iran’s nuclear activities and evaluates compliance reports from the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The debate came amid rising tensions across the Middle East. António Guterres warned the escalating crisis represents a “grave threat to international peace and security” and urged all sides to pursue dialogue and de-escalation.
Ambassador Ahmad also cautioned that military strikes targeting nuclear facilities carry severe environmental and safety risks for populations across the region.
Despite the tensions, Pakistan reaffirmed support for diplomatic frameworks including the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which underpin international monitoring of Iran’s nuclear activities.
He stressed that the IAEA’s verification work must continue without disruption.
