A couple and their four young children lost their lives after a devastating house fire engulfed their home in Peshawar's Tehkal Payan area early Thursday, with rescue officials believing the family became trapped inside a room as thick smoke and intense heat spread through the house.
According to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmed Faizi, emergency teams received the distress call at approximately 2:30am and brought the blaze under control after a 45-minute operation. During the subsequent search, rescuers recovered the bodies of the husband, wife, and their four children from a single room.
The deceased children included three daughters aged 11, 9, and 3, and a 4-year-old son. The father was also identified as a local worker associated with the Jamiat Ulema-i-Fazl (JUI-F).
Initial findings indicate the fire originated in a storage area where furniture and mattresses were kept before rapidly spreading throughout the house. Rescue officials believe the family was unable to escape as flames, heavy smoke, and extreme heat quickly engulfed the residence.
Faizi said the children's bodies showed no significant burn injuries, suggesting they most likely died from smoke inhalation and extreme heat rather than direct contact with the flames.
Police and rescue authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, and no official determination has yet been announced.
House fires remain a recurring concern across Pakistan, often linked to aging electrical systems, gas leaks, poor infrastructure, and inadequate enforcement of fire safety standards. The tragedy highlights the urgent need for stronger fire prevention measures and greater public awareness to help protect families from similar incidents.
