ZAMBOANGA, Philippines: Two students were killed in a shooting at a high school in the southern Philippines on Tuesday, including the student who opened fire, officials said. Authorities said the situation was under control and there were no further reported casualties.
The shooting took place at a school affiliated with Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City. According to a preliminary police report, a Grade 9 student brought a pistol and a rifle onto the campus and opened fire inside a classroom.
Police said the gunman died by suicide. The other victim was a male student in the grade above him.
University president Ernald Andal confirmed that the active shooting had ended and said there were no additional fatalities or reported injuries.
Students and parents gathered outside the school as armed police and soldiers secured the area. Crime scene investigators also arrived at the campus as authorities began examining the incident.
The shooting comes less than two months after another deadly school attack in the Philippines. In June, at least three students were killed and around 20 others injured at a public high school in Tacloban City after two students opened fire on campus.
School shootings are relatively rare in the Philippines, which has regulations governing legal firearm ownership, including background checks and psychological evaluations. Authorities, however, continue to face concerns over the circulation of illegal firearms.
Why it matters now: The Zamboanga shooting is the second deadly school shooting reported in the Philippines in less than two months, raising renewed concerns about student safety and security at educational institutions.
