ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday pledged stronger federal support for Gilgit-Baltistan, announcing new development priorities and public service initiatives during his first official meeting with newly appointed Chief Minister Advocate Amjad Hussain.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the premier congratulated Hussain on assuming office and reaffirmed the Centre's commitment to working closely with the Gilgit-Baltistan government to improve the welfare and well-being of the region's people.

PM Shehbaz said the federal government is accelerating Gilgit-Baltistan's development through investments in renewable energy, tourism, infrastructure, healthcare, education and other key sectors aimed at promoting sustainable economic growth and improving public services.

Among the government's flagship initiatives, the prime minister highlighted a 100-megawatt solar energy project and the establishment of Knowledge Schools, describing them as top priorities for strengthening education and expanding clean energy in the region. He also announced plans to establish a Pakistan Asaan Khidmat Centre in Gilgit to provide faster, more accessible and citizen-friendly government services.

The renewed federal commitment comes as the newly elected Gilgit-Baltistan government begins its tenure following June's regional elections, with development projects, infrastructure expansion and improved governance expected to remain key priorities.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal and Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, reflecting the federal government's coordinated approach to advancing Gilgit-Baltistan's development agenda.

Advocate Amjad Hussain, representing the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), was elected unopposed as Gilgit-Baltistan's chief minister on June 22. The PPP formed the regional government with the support of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), mirroring the coalition arrangement at the federal level after the region's elections earlier in June.

The meeting signaled continued cooperation between the federal and Gilgit-Baltistan governments, with both sides expected to prioritize renewable energy, infrastructure, education, tourism and improved public services to support the region's long-term economic and social development.
