A Muslim man remains in critical condition after a suspected religion-motivated stabbing at a shopping mall in Utah, with police alleging the attacker admitted targeting the victim because of his faith before bystanders restrained him.
The attack occurred Monday inside Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, where officers found the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds. Witnesses intervened and restrained the suspect until law enforcement arrived, preventing further violence.
Police identified the suspect as Peter Michael Larsen, 48, who was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct.
According to a police booking affidavit, Larsen allegedly admitted he targeted the victim because he was Muslim. Investigators also said the suspect made statements expressing anti-Muslim views and described him as posing a significant danger to the public due to his alleged violent ideology and references to pre-planned mass casualty events.
Local Islamic leader Imam Shuaib Din said the suspect reportedly approached the kiosk worker, asked his name and religion, requested a bottle of water, and then attacked him as he turned away to assist.
The victim was rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical condition. A fundraising campaign organized by friends states that he suffered 15 stab wounds and requires multiple surgeries. Authorities have not officially confirmed the exact number of injuries.
The suspect also received medical treatment for injuries sustained after being subdued by members of the public before being taken into custody.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and other Muslim advocacy organizations condemned the attack and called for a thorough investigation into the alleged hate-motivated violence.
Civil rights organizations have continued to warn about anti-Muslim hate crimes in the United States, citing concerns over extremist rhetoric, anti-immigration sentiment, white supremacist ideology, and tensions linked to international conflicts.
