VATICAN CITY, October 13, 2026: Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to be admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for surgery to remove a small, localised nodule in his lung, following its discovery during recent medical examinations.

The 71-year-old pontiff announced the planned procedure during his Angelus address on October 11. He said doctors had detected the nodule at an early stage and recommended removing it.

According to the Vatican press office, the Pope was expected to be admitted late on Tuesday morning. The exact time of the operation and its outcome had not been confirmed in the reports available at the time of writing.

Vatican Adjusts Pope’s Public Schedule

The Vatican cancelled the Pope’s public engagements through October 20 to allow time for treatment and recovery. His hospital stay was expected to last approximately one week, according to information released by the Holy See Press Office.

Pope Leo continued carrying out official duties on Monday, October 12, before the planned hospital admission.

What Is a Lung Nodule?

A lung nodule is a small area of abnormal tissue in the lung. Such growths can have different causes, and their discovery does not by itself establish a cancer diagnosis.

The Vatican described the Pope’s nodule as small and localised. No confirmed diagnosis establishing whether it was benign or malignant was included in the official information cited for this report.

November Visit Remains on the Schedule

Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17. Reports available before his planned admission said the visit remained on the schedule. Any later changes should be confirmed through official Vatican announcements.

Further information about the Pope’s treatment and recovery should be based on updates from the Vatican or other authoritative sources.
