Pakistan’s stock market tumbled sharply on Thursday, with heavy institutional selling dragging the benchmark index deep into negative territory during a volatile trading session.

The Pakistan Stock Exchange benchmark KSE-100 Index fell 2,537.16 points, or 1.39 per cent, closing at 180,512.64 compared to the previous close of 183,049.80. The index swung between an intraday high of 182,757.08 and a low of 178,725.24, highlighting sharp investor nervousness.

Trading volumes stood at 448.21 million shares, with total turnover reaching Rs31.95 billion — reflecting aggressive repositioning by market participants.

According to brokerage house Topline Securities, sentiment deteriorated after Engro Fertilizers Limited reported fourth-quarter 2025 earnings below market expectations. The stock touched an intraday low of Rs213.10 before settling 5.14pc lower at Rs221.14.

The exploration and production sector absorbed the heaviest blow, with Pakistan Petroleum Limited and Oil & Gas Development Company collectively wiping 383 points off the index. Additional pressure from EFERT, HUBC, SYS, and BAHL further deepened losses by 645 points.

Among volume leaders, K-Electric Limited declined 4.42pc to Rs8.22, while Cnergyico PK and Amtex also closed lower.

Why it matters now: With earnings season underway and institutional flows turning cautious, the Pakistan stock market faces heightened short-term volatility, keeping investors watchful for further corporate results and sectoral triggers.
