Russia Says India Has Not Confirmed Halting Oil Purchases After US Trade Deal Claim

Russia on Tuesday said India has not formally informed Moscow of any decision to halt purchases of Russian oil, pushing back against claims made by the United States following a newly announced trade agreement with New Delhi.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow that Russia has received no official communication from India indicating a shift away from Russian crude imports. His remarks came hours after Donald Trump said India had agreed to stop buying Russian oil as part of a broader US–India trade deal.
Under the US announcement, Washington plans to lower tariffs on Indian goods, while India would increase purchases of American oil, defense equipment, and aircraft. However, Indian officials have not publicly confirmed any commitment to end Russian oil imports.
India has emerged as one of Russia’s largest oil buyers since Western sanctions were imposed over the Ukraine war, benefiting from discounted crude and reshaping global energy flows. Any reversal would carry significant implications for both Russia’s revenue stream and global oil markets.
So far, New Delhi has maintained a careful balance in its foreign policy, expanding economic ties with the US while continuing energy cooperation with Moscow.
