Snapchat Removes 415,000 Under-16 Accounts as Australia Enforces Social Media Ban

Snapchat has shut down more than 415,000 accounts operated by under-16 users in Australia, marking one of the most significant enforcement actions since the country’s social media age ban took effect.

The figures were disclosed by Snapchat during regulatory compliance briefings in January 2026, confirming that the accounts were either locked or disabled after being flagged through age-verification checks. The company said enforcement remains ongoing, with new accounts reviewed daily.

Australia introduced its under-16 social media restriction in December 2025, placing a legal obligation on platforms to prevent children from holding accounts. Companies that fail to demonstrate “reasonable steps” toward enforcement risk severe financial penalties under the law.

Speaking on enforcement expectations, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner said platforms must show continuous compliance, not symbolic action. Snapchat acknowledged the scale of removals but cautioned that current age-detection tools are not fully reliable, noting risks of both under-blocking and wrongful account restrictions.

The company has also advocated for stronger app-store level age verification, arguing that enforcement at the platform level alone leaves structural gaps in the system.
