ISLAMABAD: Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani arrived in Islamabad early Thursday for an official two-day visit, marking the first visit by a Syrian foreign minister to Pakistan in 19 years.

The Foreign Office said al-Shaibani was received upon arrival by its additional secretary for the Middle East. The Syrian minister is leading a high-level delegation during the visit.

According to Pakistan's Foreign Office, the two sides are expected to hold detailed discussions on the full spectrum of bilateral relations, explore avenues for expanding cooperation and exchange views on regional and international developments.

The visit is particularly significant as it is the first by a Syrian foreign minister since Walid al-Mouallem visited Islamabad in May 2007. Pakistan's Foreign Ministry records confirm al-Mouallem's visit from May 15 to 17, 2007.

The engagement also comes as Syria's transitional leadership seeks to strengthen diplomatic and international ties following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government in December 2024.

Regional security is also expected to feature prominently in discussions. Pakistan recently condemned Israeli strikes on Syria's Abu al-Duhur airbase, describing such actions as violations of international law and warning that they could further undermine regional peace and stability.

Islamabad has reiterated its support for Syria's sovereignty, territorial integrity, peace and prosperity.

The visit comes at an important moment for Pakistan-Syria relations, with both sides seeking stronger political engagement and expanded cooperation following a prolonged period of limited high-level diplomatic contact.
