KARACHI: Pakistani rapper Talha Anjum has publicly voiced support for student protesters in India, urging them to "stay strong" after police used tear gas and baton charges against demonstrators attempting to march towards the Indian Parliament in New Delhi.
In an Instagram Story shared on Wednesday, Anjum posted a video of the police crackdown on supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and expressed solidarity with the students.
"To the student protesters in India. I have so much respect for your resilience. I understand your frustration. I understand what they're trying to do to you. Stay strong," he wrote.
The rapper's message quickly circulated on social media, drawing attention from fans in both Pakistan and India. His remarks are notable because he is one of Pakistan's most-streamed artists on Spotify and enjoys a large fan following across the border despite longstanding political tensions between the two countries.
The protests, which have continued for weeks in New Delhi, were sparked by allegations of repeated examination paper leaks, including controversy surrounding the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Demonstrators are demanding the resignation of India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and broader reforms to improve transparency and accountability in the country's examination system.
Thousands of protesters have maintained a sit-in in the Indian capital after authorities denied permission for a planned march to Parliament. The demonstrations turned violent earlier this week when police used tear gas and baton charges to disperse crowds, leaving dozens of people injured.
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk also joined the movement, launching a hunger strike in support of the protesters' demands. He was later taken to hospital by police after spending 20 days on hunger strike.
Anjum has previously spoken out on humanitarian and public interest issues. Earlier this year, he called on Pakistan's Foreign Office to establish a dedicated helpline for the families of Pakistani sailors held by pirates off the coast of Somalia, urging authorities to provide more consistent communication and support.
The rapper has also attracted attention for his popularity in India. During a concert in Nepal, he briefly draped an Indian flag over his shoulders after receiving it from fans, an incident that later sparked debate on social media and prompted him to address the matter publicly.
As demonstrations continue in New Delhi, support from influential public figures such as Anjum has brought additional international attention to what has become one of India's most significant youth-led protest movements in recent years, highlighting growing concerns over examination integrity, education reforms and opportunities for young people.
