Trump Warns UK Over China Engagement as Starmer Claims ‘Real Progress’ After Beijing Talks

Former US President Donald Trump on January 30 warned Britain that expanding economic and business ties with China could be “very dangerous,” openly cautioning a close ally as UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer concluded high-level talks in Beijing aimed at resetting UK-China relations.
Trump made the remarks while speaking to reporters in Washington, reacting to Starmer’s diplomatic visit and meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, highlighting growing divergence among Western allies on how to engage with Beijing amid intensifying US-China tensions.
In Beijing, Starmer struck a notably optimistic tone after talks with President Xi, saying the two sides had made “real progress” in stabilising relations that have been strained for years. The visit marked the first trip by a British prime minister to China in nearly eight years, signalling London’s intent to reopen dialogue with the world’s second-largest economy.
According to the UK government, discussions focused on trade access, economic cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges, with China agreeing to ease visa arrangements for British citizens. Starmer said Britain would pursue a “pragmatic and serious” relationship with China while continuing to uphold national security priorities and its long-standing defence partnership with the United States.
Trump, who has consistently taken a hard line on Beijing, reiterated broader US concerns over China’s economic practices and strategic ambitions. His public warning underscores potential strains within the transatlantic alliance, as Washington urges caution while London explores renewed engagement to support economic growth.
Why it matters now:
Public disagreement between US and UK leaders reflects shifting global strategies on China, with direct implications for UK-China relations, US-China tensions, global trade, and allied security coordination.
