NEW YORK: Two men were stabbed in separate attacks near Central Park on Thursday, prompting New York police to launch an investigation into whether the incidents may have been motivated by hate, authorities said.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) said officers arrested 51-year-old Raul Morales in connection with the attacks shortly after they occurred.

Police said the victims, identified as an Asian man and a Jewish man, were assaulted at separate locations near Central Park. Both were taken to hospital with injuries and are expected to survive.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said detectives are continuing to investigate the motive behind the attacks. She said victim and witness statements indicated that the suspect allegedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" during both incidents. Police stressed that investigators have not yet determined whether the statement was connected to the motive and are evaluating the case as a possible hate crime.

Authorities added that there is currently no known connection between the suspect and either victim, or between the two victims themselves.

Police also said the suspect has no recorded history of psychiatric illness in NYPD records.

In a separate statement, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said preliminary findings suggest that mental health may have been a contributing factor in the attacks.

"These hateful and despicable attacks have no place in our city," the mayor said, adding that both victims remain in stable condition.

Investigators continue to review evidence and interview witnesses as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the attacks.

Why it matters: The case has prompted a hate crime investigation and renewed attention to public safety in New York City, while officials continue to determine the motive behind the attacks.
