Russian Air Attack on Kyiv Kills Two Civilians, Ukraine Says

A Russian overnight air attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region killed at least two civilians, Ukrainian authorities said on Monday, marking what appears to be the first reported civilian deaths in Kyiv from Russian strikes this year amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said a Russian missile or drone strike hit a medical facility in Kyiv’s Obolonskyi district, in the northern part of the capital. The building, which housed an active inpatient ward, caught fire following the attack. After firefighters extinguished the blaze, one body was found inside the facility, officials confirmed.
The emergency service also reported that one woman was injured, and 25 people were evacuated from the damaged building. Images released on Telegram showed emergency responders carrying a body on a stretcher past an ambulance outside the site, with snow visible on the ground.
Beyond the capital, Russian strikes across the wider Kyiv region damaged residential homes and critical infrastructure, according to regional officials. Another civilian was killed in the Fastiv district, located southwest of Kyiv, said regional governor Mykola Kalashnyk. He added that parts of the region were left without electricity due to the attacks.
There was no immediate comment from Russia regarding the strikes. Both Russia and Ukraine have consistently denied deliberately targeting civilians.
Since the start of the nearly four-year-long Ukraine war, Russia has repeatedly launched missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and other major Ukrainian cities, saying its targets are military facilities. Ukrainian officials, however, say civilian areas and infrastructure are frequently hit, resulting in civilian casualties.
