Hearn, 67, had been charged with felony vandalism after authorities alleged he deliberately damaged the newly renovated Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. However, prosecutors later concluded that newly obtained evidence undermined the allegations against him.

Prosecutors reverse course

In a court filing submitted on Friday, federal prosecutor Jeanine Pirro asked the court to dismiss the indictment, stating that newly discovered documents showed the damage was caused by a botched installation of the pool's liner rather than any criminal act.

The filing said the new evidence "undermines the evidentiary basis for the indictment" and indicated that the Interior Department's initial assessment of the damage was incorrect.

Former Olympian maintained his innocence

Hearn, who represented the United States in three Olympic Games as a canoeist, consistently denied damaging the landmark.

He said he stopped at the Reflecting Pool after a bicycle ride and noticed part of the liner had already become detached.

According to Hearn, he briefly touched the loose material out of curiosity before being arrested by US Park Police.

"I didn't vandalise anything," Hearn told US media, insisting he neither removed nor damaged the liner.

Defence welcomes dismissal

Following the court filing, Hearn's legal team welcomed the Justice Department's decision but criticised the prosecution, arguing the case should never have been brought.

His lawyers said the arrest reflected an abuse of government authority and called on the administration to apologise, maintaining that Hearn had been wrongly accused based on inaccurate information about the condition of the renovation project.

The dismissal has renewed scrutiny over the multi-million-dollar renovation project and the information initially provided to investigators.
