Copenhagen, Denmark – A bipartisan delegation of United States lawmakers is set to visit Denmark this week as President Donald Trump’s renewed threats to seize Greenland spark diplomatic concern. Lawmakers emphasized that the visit aims to strengthen U.S.–Denmark relations while sending a message that the sovereignty of Greenland and Denmark must be respected. Senator Tillis, co-chair of the Senate NATO Observer Group, said, “It is critical that Congress stands united in supporting our allies and respecting their sovereignty.” Senator Durbin added that Trump’s “continued threats toward Greenland are unnecessary and could weaken the NATO alliance.”

Trump has repeatedly suggested that the United States must own Greenland to prevent Russia or China from gaining influence in the strategically important Arctic territory. While he has expressed a preference for a deal with Denmark, he has not ruled out taking more aggressive measures. Denmark and Greenland, however, have consistently stated that Greenland is not for sale.

The lawmakers’ visit comes amid competing bills in the U.S. Congress. Republican Representative Randy Fine introduced the Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act, which would authorize Trump to annex Greenland. In response, Democratic Representative Jimmy Gomez proposed the Greenland Sovereignty Protection Act, designed to block federal funding for any such plans.

Concerns about Greenland intensified after Trump ordered a U.S. military raid in Venezuela earlier this month to capture former leader Nicolas Maduro, raising fears about aggressive foreign policy moves. Lawmakers say the delegation’s purpose is to promote diplomatic dialogue, alliance stability, and respect for international norms, while addressing Trump’s controversial statements.

The trip highlights Greenland’s geopolitical and economic importance in global affairs, particularly as the Arctic region becomes a strategic focus for multiple world powers.
