Winter System Disrupts Pakistan as Rain Soaks Islamabad, Heavy Snowfall Paralyzes Murree and Northern Areas

A strong winter weather system continued to affect Pakistan on Tuesday, bringing persistent rain to Islamabad and Rawalpindi while causing heavy snowfall in Murree and other northern regions, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
In its morning forecast issued from Islamabad, the PMD said the active westerly wave will keep weather cold, cloudy, and unsettled across upper and central parts of the country throughout the day.
In the federal capital and twin cities, intermittent rain is expected to continue till evening.
- Islamabad temperature:
- Daytime: 11–13°C
- Night: 6–8°C
- Authorities have advised commuters to remain cautious due to wet roads and reduced visibility, particularly during peak traffic hours.
In Murree and the Galiyat, moderate to heavy snowfall is ongoing, with temperatures hovering near freezing.
- Murree temperature:
- Daytime: 0–2°C
- Night: -3 to -5°C
- Local administration officials have warned of dangerous travel conditions, urging tourists to avoid unnecessary movement as snow-clearing operations continue on key routes.
Across northern Pakistan, including upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir, snowfall is expected in mountainous areas, while rain and cold winds are likely in lower valleys.
- Valley temperatures: 4–8°C
- High-altitude areas: Below freezing
Meanwhile, major cities in southern Pakistan, including Karachi, are expected to remain dry.
- Karachi temperature: 18–20°C, with cool sea breezes
- Lahore: Cloudy conditions with chances of light rain; 13–15°C
The PMD said the current weather system is likely to persist into the night, with gradual improvement expected from Wednesday.
