World Space Week 2026 is being observed globally from October 4 to 10, with this year’s theme, “Rocket Revolution,” focusing on the rapid transformation of space-launch technology and expanding access to space. United Nations
The annual observance was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999 to celebrate the contribution of space science and technology to humanity, while promoting education, public awareness and international cooperation in space activities. United Nations
This year’s theme highlights how access to space is expanding beyond traditional government programmes through commercial launch providers, reusable rockets, university teams, startups and emerging national space actors.
The transformation is changing who can reach space, how frequently launches can take place and how space technology can be used for science, communications, Earth observation and other applications. United Nations
World Space Week also marks two major milestones in space history. Sputnik 1, the first human-made Earth satellite, was launched on October 4, 1957. Ten years later, on October 10, 1967, the Outer Space Treaty entered into force, establishing important principles for the peaceful exploration and use of outer space. United Nations
The 2026 observance comes as advances in launch technology, including reusable rockets and commercial spaceflight, continue to expand opportunities for countries, companies, researchers and students to participate in the growing space sector. United Nations
Why it matters: The “Rocket Revolution” reflects a broader shift in the space industry, where faster innovation and wider access could shape the future of exploration, research and the global space economy.
