SINGAPORE, July 2: Global oil prices extended their decline for a third consecutive trading session on Thursday as easing tensions between the United States and Iran reduced fears of supply disruptions in the Middle East, shifting investors' attention back to market fundamentals.

Brent crude slipped to around $70.90 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) traded below $68, marking their weakest levels in several months as traders responded positively to the outcome of indirect US-Iran discussions held in Doha.

Although the negotiations concluded without a comprehensive agreement, officials described the talks as constructive, helping ease concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil transit routes. The improved diplomatic tone strengthened expectations that global crude exports from the Gulf will continue without major disruptions.

Market sentiment was further weighed down by expectations that OPEC+ could approve another increase in oil production during its upcoming meeting. Additional supplies entering the market would help offset previous concerns over shortages while placing further downward pressure on crude prices.

Analysts also noted that shipping activity through the Gulf has gradually improved following recent regional tensions, allowing delayed oil cargoes to resume their journeys. At the same time, financial institutions have started lowering their oil price forecasts, reflecting expectations of a more stable supply outlook in the second half of the year.

Despite the recent decline, analysts caution that oil markets remain highly sensitive to geopolitical developments. Any deterioration in US-Iran relations, renewed security threats in the Gulf, or unexpected disruptions to energy infrastructure could quickly reverse the current trend.

Investors are now closely watching the next round of diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran, alongside the outcome of the upcoming OPEC+ meeting, both of which are expected to influence global energy prices in the weeks ahead.

Why it matters

Oil prices directly affect fuel costs, transportation expenses, manufacturing, and inflation worldwide. A sustained decline in crude prices could ease pressure on consumers and businesses, while renewed geopolitical tensions could quickly send energy costs higher again.
